How Do I Hear God's Voice When I'm Making Big Decisions in …

How Do I Hear God’s Voice When I’m Making Big Decisions in Life? –… Prefer to listen? Listen here! When we become Christians one of the several challenges we face is; figuring out what God’s will is when we’re making decisions in life. How can we seek God’s voice and know the plans he wants us to make? Many of us will go through the experience of having to make what seems like life-altering decisions. We will have to decide which University to go to, which career path to follow, or even who to marry. In fact, every single day we go through a process of making countless minute choices, that at times can also feel life-altering. When faced with such decisions, we are often left with the question; ‘what is God’s will?’ Whilst at university, I was faced with this exact conundrum. I had to make a decision that could shape the rest of my life. In the moment, I was worried that making the wrong decision could possibly be contrary to God’s will for me. At that time, it was vital for me to hear God correctly, otherwise, I would be at risk of disobeying him. The decision? Well, the age-old decision of every soon to be graduate, which job to apply for. I spent some time “listening out” for God’s voice, looking for a sign, waiting for the correct path to be revealed to me. Eventually, I thought I got what I wanted. I felt as though I heard God tell me “Apply for this job, you’ll get it”. Excitedly, I applied with all the confidence and all the faith in the world just to find out a few months later that I didn’t get the job. You can imagine the disappointment that overcame me. Of course, I was disappointed that I didn’t get the job but I was even more disappointed I had “heard God wrong”. This led me down a journey of questioning and rediscovering how God speaks to us as Christians. I wanted to learn how I could be certain when God is speaking to me. Don’t Look Up, Look Down I discovered that, the surest way to know God is speaking is by opening the Bible. One of my favourite quotes is one by Justin Peters that says, “If you want to hear God speak, read your Bible. If you want to hear God speak audibly, read your Bible out loud”. I love this quote because it simplifies the idea of “hearing the voice of God” and makes it accessible. The wonder of hearing God speak personally to us is no longer reserved for a few but has been given to all through the Bible. Oh, how precious is the Bible. It is the very word of God. In it God speaks in the twenty-first century. John Piper When we read the Bible, we are not just opening some old relic that has been passed down from generation to generation. Instead, we are…

How to Hear God for Big Decisions What happens if I miss it? What if I make a mistake? Is God gonna speak to me? Does He care? How do I even hear? Is it me or God? Making a big life decision is something that we all will face at one time or another. And these types of questions may come up. There’s no formula to hearing God’s voice but here are a few of things to keep in mind when you are seeking direction. Let’s first start here: God delights in sharing His wisdom with us. He wants us to walk in His will, so you can be sure that He is speaking to you. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” (James 1:5). It’s not if God will speak to us, He does speak to us. It’s not if God will speak to us, He does speak to us. Come with expectation because God has already promised, “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.“ (Jeremiah 33:3). If you’re leaning in to hear His thoughts but feel a little unsure, remember that God is such a great Dad and will help you. Don’t believe the lie that you can’t hear Him or He doesn’t want to speak to you. Jesus tells us in John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” How Does God Speak? I want to share some key ways God speaks to us from an article by Craig von Buseck that has been helpful in my journey and may be to yours as well. If you want to check out the rest of the article you can read the full length here! Scripture “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Godly Counsel “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14). The Prophetic (word of knowledge, word of wisdom, personal prophecy) “Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good” (I Thessalonians 5:19-21).  The Peace of God “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful” (Colossians 3:15). The Holy Spirit speaking to our heart “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen, and everyone his brother, saying, ‘know the Lord,’ for all will know Me, from the least to the greatest of them” (Hebrews 8:10-11). Circumstances/Timing “After these things he (Paul) left Athens and went to Corinth. And he found a certain Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, having recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. He came to them, and because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and they were working; for by trade they were tent-makers” “Many times the Lord will confirm His direction to us through three, four or more of these keys. Especially when we are in the process of making an important, life-changing decision.” — Craig von Buseck Keys in My Own Life I’m someone who does…

How to Know God's Voice When Making a Decision

How to Know God’s Voice When Making a Decision If you’re a follower of Jesus, then it’s important to learn how to know God’s voice. But how do you know what He’s asking you to do vs. what your own feelings tell you to do? This blog post will give you 3 easy tips to better discern God’s voice from your own! Are There Really Just 3 Ways to Know God’s Voice? No there’s not ONLY 3 ways to know God’s voice when making a decision. There are lots of ways to get a better understanding of God’s will and to discern His voice from your own. But since my descriptions of each tip started to get long I narrowed it down to 3 tips. If this is a topic you’re really interested in though, leave a comment down below and I’d love to make a part 2! Pin this photo for your friends! 1. Does it Align with the Bible? This is NUMBER ONE! Do the actions you’re about to take align with the bible? We are already gifted with God’s Word in our bible. It’s so important that we as Christians are constantly in our bibles imprinting His Word’s upon our hearts. That will give us the best discernment of what God wants for our lives. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 If you “feel” like God told you to do something but it doesn’t match up with Scripture then that is NOT God’s voice. Let me explain this with a brief example. One of my friends, we’ll call her Sally, once received a very expensive appliance she ordered online TWICE. Sally tried to call customer service but they didn’t answer right away. So she took that as a sign from God. When I talked to Sally about it she said, “I really ‘feel’ like God wants me to just keep the second one”. I then told her very plainly, “That would be stealing so there’s no way that God is telling you to keep it.” You see, sometimes we “feel” like all signs point to yes, but if God’s Word (found in the Bible) says no, then the answer is no. 2. Pray and WAIT Sometimes we’re so busy figuring out our own lives that we actually forget to stop, pray, and WAIT (this is the hardest part) for clear direction. If you want to learn how to hear God’s voice, you need to learn patience as well. Even when we want to follow Jesus, we sometimes replace His voice with our own feelings because we’re just too busy to wait on His. Now I want you to really understand what I mean here. I have not personally heard a tangible voice from God in all my years following Him. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but it hasn’t happened to me. So what do I mean when I say wait? Do I mean to pray and sit there on your bedroom floor until you hear something or see a sign at that very moment? Nope. If anything that’s kind of like holding God to OUR schedule, which is never a good thing. What I mean is after spending some serious time in prayer…

3 Ways to Discern God's Voice When Facing a Decision

3 Ways to Discern God’s Voice when Facing a DecisionHave you ever struggled to discern God’s voice when facing a decision? You know, that itching feeling when it comes to discernment. The one where you just want God to shout out which way to go?I’ve been there. Too many times.I’ve faced decisions, crossroads and major life changes and stood frozen, afraid of making the wrong choice. If I’m being honest, my career path has been far from normal. The best way I can think to describe it is as a wrestling match between my desire for security and God’s call for me.It took years of scrambling, trying to find a career, for me to finally take a leap of faith and follow God.And let me tell you, along the way, I have faced so many decisions. I’ve learned a lot about what it takes to discern God’s voice above the noise.Today, I want to share with you 3 powerful ways to discern God’s voice when you face a decision.1. Be StillGod often does not shout above the noise in our lives. When we fill our days with busy schedules, distracted hearts and occupied minds, we push out any opportunity to listen to God.I have faced the most loneliness and discontent at the end of a busy day, a busy week, a busy season. It is only when we slow down, that we open our hearts to hear God’s voice. The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. -1 Kings 19:11-12Satan wants us distracted with the fires and earthquakes in our lives. He wants us busy and burdened so that we are unable to hear the gentle whisper.I want to encourage you to set a specific time aside to be still for the Lord.Choose a day, or a specific time during the day that you can sit quietly before God and meditate on Scripture, pray and be still. When you do this, you will see past the noise and hear God’s voice.2. Don’t Listen to Fear and GuiltHow often do you act based on fear or guilt?Avoiding a conversation, changing your decision, not stepping up.I have done so many things in my life because of fear or guilt. And often, when I face a decision, these two things are on the forefront.Whether I’m afraid I’m not good enough, or afraid of the unknown, or weighed down and timid because of guilt, I have found myself facing immense guilt and fear when it comes to some major decisions.I have wrestled with the doubt that the fear I feel is a sign to stop and turn around. But God does not direct us from a place of fear or guilt. For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. -2 Timothy 1:7God calls us forth in power and in love. When facing a major decision, consider your motivation. Are you choosing based on fear and guilt or God’s love and power?3. Keep MovingOne of the greatest ways that Satan can work in a time of decision and discernment is to paralyze us with doubt. There are so many crossroads as we grow in our faith and move forward in our lives. We will face decisions of all different sizes. It may be as small as who to sit with or as big as leaving a job for ministry and everything in between.Decisions and discernment are a part of life. And we cannot let that stop us from our true calling. It is important to seek God’s will in every decision you make. However, do not let the process of discernment keep you from moving forward. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of…
